Israeli President Shimon Peres warns that a military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities could only trigger a broader confrontation.
On Sunday, Peres said he had discussed the matter with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and had expressed his opposition to a war on Iran, arguing ‘there are two ways – a military and a civilian way. I don’t believe in the military option.’
The Israeli president’s comments follow his Friday remarks, in which he said exercising a military option against Iran’s nuclear program would be ‘an error’.
“What I’m saying to you I say to Olmert, but I can’t tell you what Olmert says to me,” the Israeli president told The Sunday Times.
Olmert has repeatedly accused Iran of posing a ‘global threat’ and has urged a ‘determined’, ‘immediate’ confrontation with the country should it continue uranium enrichment.
Washington and its number one ally in the Middle East, Tel Aviv, demand that Tehran halt its uranium enrichment program, while the country is entitled to the peaceful application of nuclear technology under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
“The military way will not solve the problem,” said Peres in his interview with The Sunday Times. “Such an attack can trigger a bigger war.”
The Israeli president’s warning against a military attack on Iran followed a June report by Pentagon officials confirming that Israel conducted a military maneuver over the eastern Mediterranean and Greece in early June in preparation for a war on Iran.
