‘McCain makes cash plea to Russia’

US Republican presidential candidate John McCain has made a plea to Russia for a financial contribution to his presidential campaign.

The Russian mission to the United Nations said Monday that it had received a letter, which called for a contribution of up to $5,000 to ’stop the Obama Democrats from seizing control of the entire federal government’.

The letter was addressed to Russia’s UN Ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, and had McCain’s signature at the bottom.

Ruslan Bakhtin, a spokesman for Moscow’s UN mission, said, “neither Russia’s permanent mission to the United Nations, nor the Russian government or its officials finance political activities in foreign countries.”

The report comes as Senator McCain’s campaign manager Rick Davis has accused Democratic candidate Senator Barack Obama of receiving foreign money for his presidential campaign.

Federal law does not allow American political candidates to accept campaign contributions from foreign sources.

Brian Rogers, a spokesman for the McCain campaign said the letter was ‘just an error in the mailing list’.

Senator McCain opposes Russian policies on a number of issues. The Republican candidate has proposed setting up an alternative body, the League of Democracies, to avoid Russian veto power use in the UN Security Council.

McCain has also proposed throwing Russia out of the G8 industrialized nations over what he called ‘rolling back political freedoms’ in the country.
